WoodPoP Backs Principles for Responsible Timber Construction to Boost Sustainable Building in Europe

The European Wood Policy Platform (WoodPoP) has expressed its support for the Principles of Responsible Timber Construction, positioning the initiative as a timely contribution to Europe’s climate, industrial, and circular economy objectives.

Developed under the leadership of Bauhaus Earth, Built by Nature, Climate Advisors, and the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership (FCLP), the Principles promote responsible, science-based approaches to increasing the use of timber in construction—while ensuring sustainability and long-term climate benefits.

WoodPoP stated that the Principles are closely aligned with its country-led work in collaboration with stakeholders from 27 countries, including industry and research partners. In particular, WoodPoP pointed to strong consistency with its endorsed Policy Paper, “A Wood-Based Circular Bioeconomy for a Sustainable Europe – Green Construction and Innovative Wood Solutions” (endorsed 6 November 2024).

Key areas of alignment include actions to extend the life of existing buildings, scale modular and industrial renovation, and implement circular thinking and eco-design across the value chain. WoodPoP also reiterated the importance of sustainable forest management, robust whole life-cycle assessment (LCA), and enabling frameworks such as green public procurement to maximise wood’s long-term carbon storage potential.

WoodPoP noted that initiatives like the Built by Nature Prize and the upcoming WoodPoP Dara Award further demonstrate innovation, sustainability, and design excellence in responsible timber construction.
