WoodPoP participates in COLI Global Summit in Vienna
VIENNA, 25 Feb — The European Wood Policy Platform (WoodPoP) participated in the Global Summit “Advancing Sustainable Forest-based Bioeconomy Approaches,” held from 23 to 25 February 2026 in Vienna, Austria. Convened under the Country and Organization-Led Initiative (COLI) in support of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) and the FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO), the Summit brought together policymakers, international organisations, research institutions, and private sector representatives from more than 60 countries. The event provided a high-level forum to strengthen international cooperation and exchange knowledge on advancing sustainable forest-based bioeconomy approaches as part of global climate, circular economy, and sustainable development objectives.
Discussions during the Summit reaffirmed the strategic importance of sustainably sourced wood and wood-based products in supporting climate change mitigation, enabling circular material use, and strengthening resilient forest-based value chains. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of timber construction in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through material substitution, storing carbon in long-lived products, and enabling sustainable, low-carbon buildings and infrastructure. Participants also highlighted the importance of coherent policy frameworks, innovation, and cross-sectoral collaboration to accelerate the uptake of wood-based solutions and scale their contribution to climate-neutral and resource-efficient economies. These priorities align closely with the key messages of WoodPoP’s Wood Policy Paper (note to self: link wood policy paper), which identifies wood as a strategic renewable resource with significant potential to support climate mitigation, industrial competitiveness, and rural development, while contributing to Europe’s clean, just, and competitive transformation.
WoodPoP contributed to the Summit through an exhibit showcasing its ongoing work to strengthen policy coordination, facilitate knowledge exchange, and promote the wider adoption of sustainable wood construction across Europe. Through its activities, WoodPoP supports the development of enabling conditions that allow wood to fulfil its full potential as a climate-friendly and circular construction material.
WoodPoP expresses its sincere appreciation to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management, the COLI Secretariat, FAO, IUFRO, UNFF, and all partners for convening this important global initiative.
